ELS 311.1 Discourse Analysis (3 Units)

Examines the way post-structuralist theories inform the literary text.  It employs the terms and methods of linguistics to study choice in language use wherever the grammar allows more than one alternative.  It also seeks to establish and explore the relationships between discourse and style studies, especially how discourse considerations can explain how language users make their choices, and the effects on hearers and readers of those choices, once they are made.
