ELS 307.1 Phonology of English (3 Units)

The course surveys the consonant and vowel phonemes and allophonic variations of Standard British/American varieties of English, with special attention to phonological processes, e.g. assimilation, stress, placement roles, etc.  Students are given practice in writing broad and narrow transcriptions of selected texts and in reading English phonetic texts.  Practical exercises and drills are provided in English phonetics and phonology, including word stress, sentence stress, and intonation rhythms.
